His existence alone pushed her to do so much more and be so much more. He saw her.įurthermore, with Yu Tu’s love and ambition, JingJing was pushed to do better. In fact, our practical, geeky, quiet Yu Tu adapted to her world of glitter and glamour simply because it’s the world she loves and thrives in. This is also unlike her ex-boyfriend who asked her to change careers. Similarly, despite Yu Tu’s introversion, he never asked JingJing to stay away from the limelight. ![]() Unlike Xia Qing who wanted the same simply to make their break-up look worthy, JingJing wanted him to pursue the space simply because he loves the space. JingJing saw how much Yu Tu’s dream of being an aerospace engineer meant to him. It was more than the romantic love that the oversupply of butterflies in our stomachs indicated.īetween Yu Tu and JingJing, we witnessed a love so whole that truly sees and betters. And unlike many dramas, YAMG was spot on in its idea of love. And we joined him in this journey.īeyond the dream fulfilled, YAMG painted another fantasy – an ideal love that we all hope to find. We may be a long way from our own dreams but at least Yu Tu got his. It was a dream that we found ourselves fulfilling through Yu Tu. It is a stretch enough to get your dream in itself fulfilled more so to have this dream (especially if it’s as low-paying and time-consuming as Yu Tu’s) be validated and wholly supported by your family and partner. Not many dreamers today are fortunate enough to find that. He was lucky because he found a love in JingJing who, being a superstar herself, neither needed him to feed her because she was earning so much more than he ever would, nor needed him to be constantly by her side because she had quite a packed schedule herself. He was lucky because he’s got a family who basically said we don’t need your filial piety we only need you to be happy. ![]() Little did he know, he’d be a lucky dreamer, too. “The protagonist is a fortunate dreamer.” Yu Tu (played by Yang Yang) spoke of this in episode 5, when he and Qiao Jing Jing (played by Dilireba) recalled the movie they watched. That amidst the harsh reality, some dreamers get to be lucky to actually fulfill their dreams. One needs to view each episode very carefully because YAMG offers so many things in the unsaid.Īpart from the bitter reality pill it made us take, YAMG also painted quite that beautiful fantasy – It did great with its words, but it did so much more with its subtleties. This is the web of dilemmas that YAMG worked through.Īnd it worked through it very tastefully. No matter how much we want to give ourselves to them, to give them the best lives the world could ever provide, we could only offer so much – because this is the most our dreams could also afford us. That sometimes, our dreams take so much from us – our time and energy – leaving so less for the ones we love. That in fulfilling our dreams, while we get to save the world, sometimes, we end up forsaking our families.Īnd as if to further complicate things, they inserted love into the equation. That sometimes, dreams can only fill our hearts but not our stomachs. They brought out, with much deserved sharpness, the tension between dreams and reality. Yet what makes YAMG different is in the depth they tried to retell this trope. One may think that’s an age-old trope and I won’t lie – it is. You Are My Glory (你是我的荣耀, hereinafter, “YAMG”) is a 2021 32-episode modern Cdrama that talks about the journey of two former high school classmates as they pursue their dreams and stumble upon love. ![]() Both hit very close to home.Ĭertainly, You Are My Glory is a special drama – one that found its place among the stars. It spoke of truth – about reality, about dreams. It was a drama that I thought was all fluff, but turned out to be deeper than anybody thought it would be. When I wrote this, I had only seen the drama, hadn’t read the novel. ![]()
